About Zach Russack, Alex Mery & The Townsmen, Joon
At the age of 13, Zach received his first electric guitar for Christmas, and joined his first band the following year. Since discovering the rush from performing, Zach has made it his duty to pursue music in any way, shape, or form, no matter the cost. He studied Music & Sound Recording from The University of New Haven from 2010-2014, and pursued audio engineering, while sticking to his first found love of playing the guitar. He then acquired an internship right out of school at Electric Lady Studios in West Village, learning the ropes of the professional environment that he was encased in. After 4 months of time and energy dedicated to the facility, Zach had to move forward and find work as an audio engineer.
After the internship, Zach became an audio engineer at The Newton Theatre in Newton, NJ, running monitors and occasional FOH for the live acts that would come through. Along with this position, he began to write songs on his own time, delving into his personal life, along with creating imaginative stories that could be relatable to an audience. He found that creating songs as a whole gave him his own serenity and peace of mind, along with noticing that many follow him into his own settings that he portrays aloud. His melancholy lyrics and dulcet melodies help provide beauty and an acceptance to the desolate and depressing moments in life.
As an independent emerging folk-rock band from the east coast, Alex Mery and The Townsmen produce songs that echo throughout small venues and open mikes in Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania. The three-piece band, fronted by Alex on guitar and vocals, performs punk rock inspired folk tunes with Kara Hartzell on bass, and Matt Anderson on drums.
With a diverse range of musical backgrounds, Alex Mery and the Townsmen are mainly influenced by artists such as Nickel Creek, Billy Bragg, Against Me!, Woody Guthrie, Gregory Alan Isakov, Bad Religion and many more. They do not hesitate to experiment musically while showcasing lyrical content that touches on diverse subjects. The band released their first demo in the Fall of 2016 entitled Safely on Your Way that featured six self-produced songs including "War Horse", "Searching", and "Lay Down Arms". The trio is currently recording their debut EP set to release in Summer 2017.
