About Will Bernard and Pleasure Drones, Erik Deutsch and the Jazz Outlaws
Pleasure Drones features:
Will Bernard - guitar, keys, electronics.
Jeff Hanley - bass, keys, electronics and Eric Kalb - drums and electronics.
The group is based in Greenpoint Brooklyn, tucked away between the superfund site and over priced hipster restaurants. The basic model of PD is to create new material on the spot and then refine it through recordings and arrangements. Most of PD's material has been developed this way in rehearsal. Jeff Hanley's adept use of modern electronics paired with his old school solid bass playing blend seamlessly with the breakbeat style drumming of Eric Kalb and the psychedelic textures and funk of guitarist Will Bernard. The blend of electronics and cinematic textures make the band suitable for dance floors and sound tracks. Often the Drones feature guests vocalist or instrumentalists.
Although currently a New Yorker, Guitarist Will Bernard's unique voice was formed fro the most part from the rich cultural roots of the San Francisco Bay Area. Along the way he studied Classical music, Jazz, played in basements and coliseums and absorbed the Bay Area Multi Kulti and the New York Downtown edge. He has in his journey made music with Charlie Hunter, Stanton Moore, Robert Walter, John Medeski, Ben Sidran, Peter Apfelbaum,Tom Waits and a lot of other known and unknowns. Will can be seen working in a chameleon like way to fit into his current habitat. His 2007 CD "Party Hats" as well as his 1997 collaborative project T.J. Kirk "If four was one" were both nominated for Grammys. Will's 7th album as a leader was released in the fall of 2013 on Posi-tone records.
Eric Kalb has a who's who list of bands he has been a part of and he in constant demand. He has played with Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, John Scofield, Deep Banana Blackout, Melvin Sparks, Greyboy Allstars and Charlie Hunter.
Jeff Hanley is a right hand man for many in the New York scene, most notably Marsalis music recording artist Doug Wamble with whom he has toured extensively. He also plays with the Jay Collins group, Anthony Cole, Branford Marsalis and many others.
feat. Erik Deutsch on keys, Avi Bortnick on guitar, Tim Luntzel on bass, Tony Mason on drums, and vocalist Victoria Reed.
Having first come to prominence as a member of the funk-jazz collective Fat Mama (with Joe Russo on drums), Brooklyn-based pianist Erik Deutsch has taken his talents across the globe to play with some of the finest musicians alive. Born in Washington D.C., Erik exists in many musical worlds, touring and recording with pop artists like Norah Jones, Rosanne Cash, Citizen Cope, Shooter Jennings, Alice Smith, Phillip Phillips, Joey Arias, and Devotchka; or with jazz artists like Charlie Hunter, Steven Bernstein, Jim Campilongo, Nels Cline, and Scott Amendola.
2015 marks the release of Erik's fourth album entitled Outlaw Jazz. Featuring a new blend of countrified jazz with his signature psychedelic soul-jazz sound, Deutsch is joined by an all-star cast of musicians including country music icon Shooter Jennings on vocals. Since it's release on February 24, 2015 on the Nashville-based record label Cumberland Bros, the music has been met with rave reviews. RollingStone debuted the single "Whistlers and Jugglers", JazzTimes debuted the video for "Dearest Darling", and many top publications reviewed the record including the Huffington Post and USA Today.
Country music and jazz can make for strange bedfellows, but musicians who love both sometimes create fascinating hybrids, like vibraphonist Gary Burton's ahead-of-its-time 1966 album Tennessee Firebird and guitarist Bill Frisell's bluegrass-infusedNashville. Add New York-based pianist Erik Deutsch's 'Outlaw Jazz' to that list" -- USA TODAY
