Whale Oil, Lord Nelson

Hailing from Portland, Maine, Whale Oil is a trio that bridges the gap between many different genres to create what they call "Barn Rock", It all becomes clear when Bill Scanlan's intricate guitar work combines with McCrae Hathaway's deep low end and Brian Saxton's powerhouse drumming and vocals.

Thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign, Whale Oil's debut album was released June 2013.


Lord Nelson is a rock 'n' roll band from foothills of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains. Embracing a driving southern rock identity, they perform original songs about the land and people they grew up around. Inspiration comes from a variety of artists and genres for this 5-piece resulting in a unique sound that features three-part vocal harmonies, soaring horn lines, and funk-laden rock beats.

Since March of 2012, brothers Kai (guitar, vocals) and Bram Crowe-Getty (drums), and Henry Jones (trombone, vocals), have been the driving force behind the band. A rotating cast of players has rounded out the group, and currently features Robert Word on lead guitar and Trevor Pietsch on bass.

Following the release of their debut EP, Lost in the Orchard (a collection of songs arranged in an orchard farmhouse), Lord Nelson has been working hard to define their sound and expand their musical horizons. The band plays routinely in the Charlottesville area, while doing mini tours throughout the region.
