About The Wikileaks Files: The World According to U.S. Empire – Julian Assange in conversation with Jeremy Scahill

The WikiLeaks Files is the first book to systematically examine the substance of the diplomatic cables leaked in 2010, and an essential guide to the day-to-day realities of American foreign policy. Published in collaboration with WikiLeaks, the book presents region-by-region analysis by area specialist of the most important cables and outlines their historical importance. The chapters explore the machinations of the United States as it imposes its agenda on the world: a new form of imperialism founded on varied tactics from torture to military action, to trade deals and “soft power,” in the perpetual pursuit of expanding influence. It illustrates the close relationship between government and big business in promoting US trade around the world. An introduction by Julian Assange—writing on the subject for the first time—exposes the ongoing debates about freedom of information, international surveillance, and justice.

Julian Assange is the editor in chief of WikiLeaks and the author of Cypherpunks: Freedom and the Future of the Internet and When Google Met WikiLeaks. An original contributor to the cypherpunk mailing list, Assange is the author of numerous software projects in line with the cypherpunk philosophy, including the Rubberhose encryption system and the original code for WikiLeaks. An “ethical hacker” in his teens, and subsequently an activist and internet service provider to Australia during the 1990s, he is the co-author (with Sulette Dreyfus) of Underground, a history of the international hacker movement. Julian is currently a refugee under the protection of the government of Ecuador, and lives in the Ecuadorian embassy in London.
