"The Music of Buena Vista Social Club": Trio Pays Tribute to Cuba's Golden Age

The Buena Vista Social Club has long been much more than just a music venue: The long-shuttered nightspot has lent its name to Grammy-winning albums, an Oscar-nominated documentary and, most importantly, to a musical genre celebrating Cuba's "Golden Age" -- the vibrant sounds of the '30s, '40s and '50s. Now a red-hot trio of musicians, led by guitarist-vocalist Francois Wiss, pays tribute to this dynamic, danceable music at New York City's Subrosa. Wiss was a music student at Paris' Conservatoire, where he was mentored by several guitar masters, including the legendary Pierre Cullaz. Now, joined by Damian Quinones (guitar and vocals) and Danny Valdez (percussion and vocals), he'll perform such Buena Vista Social Club favorites as "Chan Chan," "El Payande," "Se Seco el Arroyito" as well as many others.
