Jazz at Lincoln Center Presents "The Artistry of Max Roach" With Ali Jackson

Legendary drummer Max Roach has been revered as a bebop pioneer, a paramount innovator of the drums and a prominent social activist. Ali Jackson -- composer, arranger and drummer for the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra -- offers up a one-night-only salute to his icon with "The Artistry of Max Roach", at the Center's Rose Theater. Roach kicked down perceived boundaries of drumming, creating clear melodies, advanced themes, and unparalleled virtuosity. He famously played with greats like Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker and Miles Davis, in addition to leading his own groups. After crossing paths with Roach at age 12, Jackson was forever impacted, and the two would enjoy a formative student-teacher connection. As an undisputed disciple of Roach, Jackson will perform original compositions inspired by this boldly imaginative and inspiring figure.
