Serena Jost

Serena Jost writes and performs songs that are at turns seductive, edgy, affecting, and otherworldly. A dynamic singer and cellist with a hauntingly beautiful voice, she is a unique performer whose music evokes vivid emotional landscapes. Serena’s new album, A Bird Will Sing, was exquisitely produced by the legendary Anton Fier (Golden Palominos) and recorded with her band. The album moves from spare art songs to whimsical ballads to cello-led rock tunes. Serena is joined by her band Julian Maile-guitar, Rob Jost-bass, and Robert DiPietro-drums plus very special guests including Doveman.


Growing up between The Midwest and Switzerland, Serena has walked along the Great Lakes (she found her cello wrapped in a brown blanket in a basement in northern Michigan) and over mountain passes (she comes from a long line of gown-wearing, horse-riding yodelers). She happily calls NYC home, where her Midwestern friendliness and Swiss persistence come in handy. Serena has performed at seminal NYC venues such as Joe’s Pub, The Living Room, Barbès, Banjo Jim’s, Pete’s Candy Store, Tonic, and The Kitchen. Her debut CD, Closer Than Far, was produced by Brad Albetta (Martha Wainwright, Teddy Thompson). She has collaborated with poet Dan Machlin (Immanent Audio, Ugly Duckling Presse), and numerous dancers, including Douglas Dunn and Kathryn Sanders (Wally Cardona). She is an original member of Rasputina, the well-corseted cello group.
