About Sehrang Jazz Trio

“For those who haven’t looked beyond American borders to see how jazz is interpreted in other nations Dar Lahze will be an enlightening experience. Free from any commercial constraints, Sehrang roam through various styles and tones; every track has its own personality and individual quirks.

The ethereal glow of Golnar Shahyar’s voice immediately lights up Dar Lahze, the debut album from Sehrang. Featuring vocalist Shahyar, guitarist Mahan Mirarab, and percussionist Shayan Fathi, Sehrang (which means “tri-colored” in Farsi) is a trio of Iranians whose compositions unite jazz with world and Persian folk music. It’s an exotic mix, one that transcends geographical and language barriers, producing an album that is unique and endlessly fascinating.”

“Their musical landscape has a texture of Persian folk and classical — very rhythmic-based, emphasizing percussion and syncopation and featuring a vocal style that combines tribal chanting, scat singing, and tahrir (a type of an ornamental trill or a style of singing comparable to yodeling).

To those who are curious to taste Persian-rooted World music, Sehrang’s is a sumptuous offering. In fact, even enthusiasts of alternative music could partake in it, what with hints of Babacar, Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, and Shelleyan Orphan.

Subtle, explosive and groovy, Sehrang’s music is dynamic, which arouses a whole range of emotions.”
