"Reefer Madness": Comedy Based on Cult Classic Propaganda Film

"Marihuana makes fiends of boys in thirty days; hashish goads users to bloodlust," proclaimed a Hearst newspaper article in 1936, the same year the now cult-classic anti-drug propaganda film "Reefer Madness" was released. Though we now all know a little Mary Jane does not create fiends and induce bloodlust, the exploitation film's anti-"marihuana" message continues to entertain, this time through the AlphaNYC Theater Company's performance of this over-the-top stage adaptation of the same name. Following a group of swell kids who are lured into a world of death, destruction and -- gasp -- jazz after hitting a single joint, "Reefer Madness" is a tongue-in-cheek comedy that continues the movie's high jinks in an even wackier form.
