About Raise the Roof for Roots feat. Rebirth Brass Brand
Join us on June 1, 2015 at the Cutting Room for a very special benefit concert featuring a performance by Grammy-winning artist Rebirth Brass Band. Proceeds from the event will benefit The Roots of Music’s after school music education programs for underserved youth in New Orleans. The price of admission includes access to an open bar, hors d'oeuvres, and more. Join us as we “Raise the Roof for Roots” and bring some New Orleans flavor to New York City for a night.
THE CAUSE
Since 2008, The Roots of Music has been dedicated to teaching, supporting and empowering the youth of New Orleans through music education, academic support and mentorship, while preserving and promoting the unique musical and cultural heritage of the city. The organization fills a void in music education programs in New Orleans schools, serving over 100 students a year ages 9-14 from low-income households. It is New Orleans’ only completely free, year-round program of its kind and it instills discipline, a sense of community, and integrity that empowers kids to achieve positive outcomes musically, academically and personally.
THE BAND
Whether seen on HBO’s Treme or at their legendary Tuesday night gig at The Maple Leaf, Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band is a true New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. While committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands, they’ve also extended themselves into the realms of funk and hip-hop to create their signature sound. “Rebirth can be precise whenever it wants to,” says The New York Times, “but it’s more like a party than a machine. It’s a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos: as long as everybody knows what they’re doing, anyone can cut loose.” In the wake of the sometimes- stringent competition amongst New Orleans brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack, and they show no signs of slowing down.
