About PC Worship, Axis: Sova (record release show), LUSHES, Xander Duell
"PC Worship kick it dense and heavy with a damaged crude DIY psych edge that often transcends into totally catchy melodic and repetitive jammers".
The muggy haze of the AXIS:SOVA sound is pollinated by nomadic guitar tones, accompanied by a Roland TR-66 Rhythm Arranger. Described as "beautifully junky, skewed surf-rock as projected through a rust belt prism, complete with hummable hooks and scorching guitar pyrotechnics" (The Decibel Tolls), "intangible sounds and textures rippling throughout cosmic lullabies" (Time Out Chicago), and "eerie and beautiful, dark and buyant" (Adhoc), AXIS:SOVA is the nom de plume of guitarist Brett Sova. Weight Of A Color is the recently released debut LP from this solo jammer, just out on Kill Shaman Records, but this show also celebrates the release of "Past The Edge," a brand new 7" on Richie Records // TestosterTunes.
LUSHES are a two-piece rock band from Brooklyn, NY. Their first
album, WHAT AM I DOING, was mixed by Adam Cooke (Beach House, Double Dagger),
and produced by Bachelorette (Drag City) and LUSHES.
LUSHES' music brings together the metal and early grunge influences of
guitarist/synth/lead singer James Ardery with the classical influences of
drummer/SPD-S sampler Joel Myers. They meet somewhere in the middle, adding
synth textures, pianos recorded backwards, opera samples, power saws, vocal mumbling
and whatever else they can come up with, all played over trance-inducing percussion
and emotive guitar lines. The result is an aesthetic that alternates between sparse and
immersively lush.
LUSHES started playing in a garage in south Williamsburg in 2010. They have
played with Guardian Alien (Greg Fox, ex Liturgy drummer), Dope Body, Dead Rider
(Todd Rittman of U.S. Maple), The Disappears (with Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth), and
Notekillers, among others.
LUSHES are goof-offs, spazzes, warm hearted boys who will bum a beer off you,
then save your life when you need it.
It's going to take more than the space provided here to sum up the ideas and talent of NYC's Xander Duell, who has fused decades' worth of nuance into these thirteen songs. The implication in the title of this one is at least somewhat correct in that the experimental nature of Duell's music rears its head in style and content atop songwriting that touches the emotional core without hesitation or regret. There is joy and sadness here, electronics and guitars, grandeur alongside the neon-lit sleaze. Calibrate your expectations appropriately on this one, but be prepared to have them shattered by this outsider work, in the spirit of Scott Walker's numbered albums and the prime cut of '70s soft rock.
