About New York Electric Piano

NEW YORK ELECTRIC PIANO is celebrating the release this fall of their eight studio album, State of the Art, a collection of edgy instrumentals that include multiple keyboards played at the same time, electronics, sampled voices and prepared piano. Pianist Pat Daugherty and drummer Aaron Comess, from the Spin Doctors, are joined for the second time by electric bassist Richard Hammond from the show Hamilton, and a heightened degree of creative juice is in effect. The band's previous release, Black Hole in One, received healthy airplay on both jazz and alternative stations. NYEP’s 6th record, a double CD work called Keys To The City, spent a month in the top ten of the CMJ’s Jazz Chart and received accolades from Pop Matters, Sea of Tranquility, JazzTimes, Drumhead, and All About Jazz. The N.Y. Times has called front man Daugherty “an imposing presence”. Members of the band have recorded and performed with Ornette Coleman, Joan Osborne, Bono and the Edge, Roswell Rudd, and Snoop Dogg among others. The band is built around the sound of the classic Fender Rhodes piano and the idea that anything can happen inside or outside the music.
