About Malcolm Bruce
Sometimes it's not such an easy thing to be the son of a legendary artist. The shadow cast over Malcolm Bruce's own career by that of his father, bassist and vocalist Jack Bruce (Cream), has been at times eclipsing and at others complementary.
That's not to say he has been idle. Malcolm has worked much within the industry, as touring musician, recording artist and composer. He has appeared on recordings with Eric Clapton, Dr John and Elton John. Assisted in the studio with Little Richard. Performed in his own band with Leslie West. Malcolm performed and recorded with his father Jack many times in a supporting role, culminating with Jack's album 'Silver Rails' recorded at Abbey Road Studios in 2014.
Now Malcolm is arriving in his own right, simultaneously carrying on his father's musical legacy as well as finally finding his own musical voice.
There's a fragility in what Malcolm does. A naïveté and wish to fight against too much of a formulaic approach. He wants to explore different facets of his own creative spirit. He wants to rock out, but also wants to express tenderness and subtlety; he wants to be accessible, universal in expression, but is fascinated by the minutiae of contemporary classical and jazz sound worlds. He is involved with many aspects of improvisation, but is drawn to structure and form. He is continually seeking to develop technically but recognises the power of creating from the heart, from experience. To him these are not mutually exclusive places to inhabit, but different aspects of a whole musical universe. He has learnt his craft steadily and continues to develop. In a sense each day is a fresh beginning, a concerted effort to maintain an innocence and create from fresh perspectives.
Malcolm has toured all over the world throughout his career so far, whether as solo artist (opening up for the likes of Andy Fraser from Free) or as a band member (in Sons of Cream), and even as a sideman (for example as bass player for Ned Evett on a world tour supporting Joe Satriani). He is also working in other genres, collaborating on musical theatre projects in NYC and London and writing opera and orchestral music.
Malcolm is releasing a new full length album exclusively through Pledge Music this September, recorded in Nashville and London, and will be touring extensively in support of the release starting with headline shows at Bush Hall in London and The Cutting Room in NYC.
There's a free EP download for everyone who pledges towards the campaign. For more info about how to get involved:
