Madeleine Dopico + Upright Man

MADELEINE DOPICO is more than a typical singer- songwriter with a dream. In her first year of independently releasing music, the Sleepy Hollow, New York native’s soulful indie-pop track, “Nice Boy” took off with over 230,000 streams on Spotify. Her new genre-blurring concept EP, "Poor Decision Making" is quickly gaining traction with some of the most prestigious music blogs. You may actually be familiar with Dopico's voice without knowing it, as she was featured in the Google Pixel, Prince tribute commercial for the 2017 Grammy Awards.

Backed by a live band she directs, Madeleine is established in New York City’s live music scene. She was recently the featured performer atop the One World Observatory of the World Trade Center, completed a residency at Pianos NYC, and has packed the house at classic venues such as Highline Ballroom- supporting American Idol star Haley Reinhart, The Studio at Webster Hall, The Knitting Factory, and The Bitter End. She also had her West Coast debut this summer, bringing a crowd out to the renowned Silverlake Lounge in Los Angeles.

When she isn’t performing, Dopico is working on new music with stylistic vulnerability, catchy hooks, thought-provoking lyrics and dynamite vocal range. She’s set apart as a prolific writing machine, with no shortage of new material. Madeleine currently has plans in the works to package and release content bulks in unexpected ways, including using visual art pieces and self- scripted film. Pushing the envelope further, she is learning to produce and record herself, in order to bridge what she feels is a male/female gap in the industry’s technical side, and to become a more expansive, self-sufficient creative.

While music has always been Madeleine’s passion, the Ivy League graduate actually has a degree in Health and Societies from the University of Pennsylvania. A little over two years ago, she was still working a secure desk job at an NYC HealthTech startup. She took the leap to commit to her art full-time, and hasn’t looked back. Today, Madeleine Dopico is quickly proving her place in the industry.

New York City-based rock band Upright Man - Aidan Dolan (guitar/vocals), Nick Katz (bass/vocals) and Max Yassky (drums/percussion/background vocals) – released their dynamic self-titled debut on August 18, 2017. The album’s ten tracks were produced by Marc Copely (Roseanne Cash, B.B. King, Billy Squire) and Zev Katz (Jeff Beck, Hall & Oates, Aretha Franklin) and engineered by Bruce Sugar (Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh) at Avatar Studios and Sear Sound in NYC and at Blackbird Studios in Nashville.

Upright Man crafted an ambitious, formidable album that immediately captivates and deepens with each listen. The uniquely composed songs boast the hulking riffs and spacey twists of the eponymous “Upright Man” while the tribal beats of “Animals” and “Checked Out” throw you into a frenetic hypnosis. “Three Easy Pieces” mesmerizes with propulsive piano-driven melodies. The lush and rocking arrangements of “Agorognostic", “Say What You Mean” and “Designer Mind” lyrically delve into the confusion and unpredictability of what our modern future brings. The logically absurd music video for “Ecstasy” takes you on Upright Man’s journey to leave earth via makeshift spaceship.

Upright Man met while studying classical music composition at New York University where they played together on various projects ranging from classical ensembles to rock bands. Their strong writing chemistry spurred the formation of the band. Combining elements of alternative, psychedelic, progressive and classic rock with complex harmonies and time signatures, Upright Man seamlessly intertwines influences like Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Crowded House, Little Feat, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin and XTC into a unique sound all their own. 

Aidan explains, “Our different musical backgrounds make for an explosive chemical reaction that creates something none of us would have alone.” “We have a compulsion to write songs together and do so constantly,” adds Nick. “We just want to write great songs, play genuine music and share it with the world,” says Max.
