"La Rumba Is A Lovesome Thing": Honoring Billy Strayhorn With Latin Jazz Flair

"La Rumba is A Lovesome Thing" celebrates the life and work of revered jazz pianist and composer Billy Strayhorn, who's best remembered for composing The Duke Ellington Orchestra's signature song "Take the A Train." Saxophonist Paul Carlon's 11-piece ensemble takes you on a fantastic journey through Strayhorn's big band repertoire, using it as a vehicle for reinterpreting Latin jazz styles like "guaguancó", "son", "bomba" and "timba". Joining Carlon at this tribute at New York's Zinc Bar is another of New York City's most innovative Latin jazz groups, Benjamin Lapidus' Sonido Isleño. It's a special night of sultry vocals, the "tres" guitar, horns for days, Latin percussion, subtle Afro-Caribbean rhythms -- and the chance to see and hear some of New York City's finest musicians at work and play.
