About Kranti: Red-Light Theatre

Young Women Share the Horrors and Hopes of Life in Mumbai's Red-Light Districts

The Kranti: Red-Light Theatre troupe presents a gripping, heartrending real-life saga composed by young women who were born and raised in Kamathipura, Mumbai, which is Asia's largest and most infamous red-light area. The young stars -- who range in age from ages 13 to 19 -- will perform "Laal Batti Express" (Red-Light Express), a three-segment play that sheds light on their mothers' work and their childhoods spent in brothels. The play is an initiative of Kranti, an NGO working to educate and empower trafficked girls and daughters of sex workers. Through this performance at New York's Kraine Theater, you'll get a sense of their plight, the discrimination they've faced and the struggles they've overcome. You'll also hear them voice their hopes and dreams for the future.
