About Kane Mathis Trio, Honeybird, The Bad New Ones, Out Of System Transfer

Performing on the 21-string Mandinka Harp and the Turkish Oud, Kane Mathis renders compelling interpretations of these traditional musics.

years of study with generous masters have given Kane a rare opportunity to share these traditions with other cultures.

Kane began taking trips to The Gambia, West Africa
in 1997 and has continued rigorous study of the Mandinka Kora. Over the past ten years his performances have earned him recognition by the Gambian president, The Gambian minister of culture, and both national television and radio of The Gambia.

Kane’s primary kora teachers are Malamini Jobarteh of Brikama, The Gambia and Moriba Kouyate of The Gambia. The Jobarteh family remain one of The Gambia’s most important musical legacies. Tata Din din Jobarteh, Pa Bobo Jobarteh, and Siffai Jobarteh are the families current most visible exponents touring the world.

Kane’s Oud study began with Mutlu Torun of the I.T.U. conservatory in Istanbul and continued with 5 and a half years of courses with Oud virtuoso Münir Nurttin Beken.

Honeybird honed her songwriting and performing craft over fourteen years living in Rome, Italy. Charango and electric bass her main instruments, writing songs and performing her passion.

As the leader of honeybird & the birdies, she played more than 400 concerts in twenty countries, including international festivals Primavera Sound, Eurosonic Noorderslag, MaMA Event, and Cherchez La Femme and performed live on Italian television and radio, Catalan radio and German radio.

In 2014, she moved to Brooklyn to pursue a new solo project. More sultry and mature, the intensity of the big city kicked her in the calf—literally; she spent her first summer in NY on crutches. She used that time as an opportunity to dive into her new album, which she recently recorded with Grammy-award winning producer/engineer Marc Urselli, bassist/vocalist Ivy Wong, drummer/percussionist Tim Keiper, and renowned Italian multi-instrumentalist Enrico Gabrielli.

"A rock band with a honky-tonk lilt" - The New York Times

Out of System Transfer comes from Brooklyn, and plays high-energy, semi-acoustic folk-punk. Live shows with Out of System Transfer are an engaging mix of jangly punk, punchy brass, and crisp vocal harmonies, enjoyable for all who like dancing, yelling, and mayhem. On top of playing some of New York's coolest DIY venues like the ABC No Rio, Silent Barn, and Goodbye Blue Monday, they have performed at events supporting activist groups like SolidarityNYC and the Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls.
