Sangha, the Tibetan word for community is a perfect definition of Jonathan Powell and his group of musicians. A new community of musicians striving to uplift, inspire and innovate through stunning compositions and masterful musicianship. The band prominently features some of the top new-generation musicians in the NYC jazz scene having individually performed, recorded and collaborated with the likes of Eddie Palmieri, Arturo O’Farrill, Christian Scott, Brian Lynch, Sean, Jones, Sam Rivers, Andy Milne, Lonnie Plaxico and many more.

The groups first album “Transcend” (2010) broke the molds of traditional and contemporary jazz including aspects of electronica, metal, and world music elements. Now the band gears up for the release of it’s sophomore album “Beacons of Light” to be released later this year. The “Beacons of Light” project draws inspiration from awe-inspiring men and women of history who have been a light in the darkness. Compositions written for the likes of civil rights legend Dr. Martin Luther King , Jr., Burmese democratic activist Aung San Suu Kyi, Tibetan spiritual leader and refugee The Dalai Lama, christian mystic Stylianos Atteshlis, and others adorn the album.
