The Nuyorican Poets Cafe showcases a talented lineup of multi-genre, multi-generational and multicultural spoken word artists and musicians, including Shanelle Gabrielle, Roya Marsh, Daniel Gallant, Pamela Sneed, Crystal Valentine, JP Howard, the Cafe’s 2014 Slam Team and host Jive Poetic. Allen Ginsberg called the Cafe “the most integrated place on the planet,” the Wall Street Journal says the Cafe is “a thriving arts center,” and John Leguizamo says the Cafe, “put the street on stage… Made our lives real, our emotions real.”

Poet, teacher and DJ, Jive Poetic has toured Australia, Canada and Europe. His CD Perpedenctive and his poetry music videos have received rave reviews, and he has been published and translated in several anthologies. He appeared in the feature film Jamesy Boy, starring James Woods, Ving Rhames & Mary Louise Parker. He hosts and DJs events at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe.


New York based poet, performer, writer and actress, Pamela Sneed’s work has been featured in the New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, The Source, Time Out, Bomb, Next, MetroSource, Blue, VIBE, HX, and on the cover of New York Magazine. She is the author of Imagine Being More Afraid of Freedom than Slavery, and of Kong & Other Works, and has performed for sold out houses at Lincoln Center, Creative Time at The Brooklyn Anchorage, The Studio Museum, Exit Art, PS. 122, The ICA London, Joe’s Pub/Public Theater and many more. In 1998, Sneed was nominated for a Lambda Literary Award and is a recipient of the 2006 Baxten Award For Performance, a Franklin Furnace Award, two Joyce-Mertz Gilmore Commissions for P.S.122 and a 6-week residency at the corporation of Yaddo. An adjunct associate professor of Speech, Communication and Theater at Long Island University and also a visiting professor in the Core Seminar department, she holds a 2008 M.F.A in New Media Art and Performance. Her work has been seen in The 100 Best African American Poems (edited by Nikki Giovanni), To Be Left With the Body, The Best American Plays 2005-6, and Brown Sugar: An anthology of Black Erotica.
