About "Hick: A Love Story"

"Hick: A Love Story" Tells of Eleanor Roosevelt's Lesbian Lover

When she became First Lady of the United States in 1933 as the wife of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt was the bearer of a very big secret: she had a lesbian lover. Lorena Hickock, a famous American journalist, first met Eleanor in 1928, but their friendship took on new life when Lorena accompanied Eleanor on a long train ride to the funeral of Franklin's secretary's mother in 1932. Over the years they took a number of trips together, Hickock booming a fixture at the Roosevelt household, with the two women exchanging 2,236 letters over the course of their relationship. With these letters as a living document, the story of this compelling one-woman show comes to life in "Hick: A Love Story", on the stage of New York City's Soho Playhouse.
