About Gurus

Gurus is a big multimedia project based in Brooklyn, NY, with street percussion, saxophone, voices, visual imagery, and printed material, singing about a cult and at times resembling one.

Taking this sense of community to its extreme, Gurus forthcoming full-length, Unconditional Surrender, creates the world of a cult – the Gnostic Urban Reformation of Unconditional Surrender (GURUS) – and offers first-person perspectives from figures living inside the compound. The cult's hodgepodge manifesto and haunting visuals are pieced together from bits of new-age wisdom, the language of 12-step programs, and reactions to the explosion of digital platforms.

Their focus on street percussion evokes one of the few spaces of spontaneous community in modern urban life. Employing buckets, trash can lids, and metal scraps, Gurus' onstage performance plucks a piece of the New York City street, creating a cacophonous, connected clan.

Their debut single, “Believers,” recorded by Gary Atturio of Studio G, is out February 5, 2016, followed by their album, Unconditional Surrender, in May 2016.
