About Guest Event: "Molly Crabapple & Friends Celebrate DRAWING BLOOD"

Please join us for an evocation and celebration of artist and writer Molly Crabapple's memoir, DRAWING BLOOD, published December 1 by HarperCollins, with special guest readings by Laurie Penny, Natasha Lennard, Jen Dziura and other special guests and friends of the parts in which they appear in the book, plus a special performance by "noise witch" Kim Boekbinder, who also plays a role in the text. Called "an emblem of the way art can break out of the gilded gallery," by the New Republic, Crabapple has drawn in Guantanamo Bay, Abu Dhabi's migrant labor camps, and with rebels in Syria. She is a contributing editor for VICE, and has written for publications including The New York Times, Paris Review, and Vanity Fair. Her work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, and has been called “equal parts Hieronymus Bosch, William S. Burroughs and Cirque du Soleil,” by The Guardian. Crabapple herself has been called “THE artist of our time” by comedian Margaret Cho, and spent four years as the staff artist of The Box, one of the world’s most lavish (and notorious) nightclubs. Molly has taken her sketchbook from burlesque halls to refugee camps, always with a skeptical eye for power. Joss Whedon says, “Molly Crabapple’s extraordinary memoir reads like a great novel, full of exotic locations, fascinating characters, passion, politics, a measured amount of bodice ripping, and above all, art. Crabapple brings a unique perspective to the artist’s journey, for she has been both artist and model, performer and recorder – she has straddled the gaze, Galatea to her own Pygmalion, and her vibrant, voracious trail is one well worth following."
