About Gillian, Dead Wicks, The Evening News
Guitarists Geoff Bennington and Paul Demyanovich have shared bands since the 2nd grade. After parting ways to go to college, seven years later they found themselves together again in Brooklyn and "Gillian" came soon after. Geoff met Alex Fedorow (bass) and Kym Hawkins (vocals/percussion) while working at a guitar store in the East Village and called up childhood friend Brian Yurachek (drums) to complete the recipe.
The quintet's tight, feisty live show quickly gained a reputation. Crowds enjoy the band's chemistry on stage, and find their energy infectiously contagious. With catchy melodies and syncopated rhythms that beg you to move, even the most jaded of New Yorkers leave with a smile. The band is even apt to pleasantly surprise bartenders whose ears have grown used to the constant noise that is thousands of bands trying to make it in the big apple.
Gillian has been on two national tours and held a June '15 residency at Arlene's Grocery after selling out the venue earlier this year. Their first single Freak Flag(Nov '13) received international press from NYC's "Death+Taxes" to London's "The 405", setting off reviews as far as Germany and Japan. They've since released two EPs, The Eyes in My Head (July '14), and Colorize (April '15), to much acclaim, including write-ups in Baeble, The Deli, Raw Ramp, Stereo Pill, Indie Minded, Diffuser, and SPIN Magazine, who hosted an exclusive premiere of their title track "Colorize" and compared the band to the likes of Alabama Shakes, Gwen Stefani and the Yeah Yeah Yeah's.
Their sonic pallet and celebratory live performance is ever-growing, with the recent addition of live projections, a brass section, and sometimes balloons and dancers in the mix. They are currently preparing to get back into the studio to record a single for Converse Rubber Tracks as well as beginning to record their first full length release.
