About Erik Deutsch and the Jazz Outlaws

Having first come to prominence as a member of the funk-jazz collective Fat Mama, Brooklyn-based pianist Erik Deutsch has taken toured and recorded with pop artists like Norah Jones, Rosanne Cash, Citizen Cope, Shooter Jennings, Alice Smith, Antony and the Johnsons, Phillip Phillips, Joey Arias, Devotchka, and Erin McKeown; or with jazz artists like Charlie Hunter, Theo Bleckmann, Ben Allison, Scott Amendola, Trevor Dunn, Steven Bernstein, Ellery Eskelin, Jim Campilongo, Nels Cline, Jenny Scheinman, Allison Miller, Todd Sickafoose, and Art Lande.

Erik just finished a brand new recording entitled Outlaw Jazz. Featuring a new blend of countrified jazz with his signature psychedelic soul jazz sound, Deutsch is joined by an all-star cast of musicians including country music icon Shooter Jennings on vocals. Released on February 24, 2015 on the Nashville-based record label Cumberland Bros, and the first single "Whistlers and Jugglers" was featured on Rolling Stone last month.

Country music and jazz can make for strange bedfellows, but musicians who love both sometimes create fascinating hybrids, like vibraphonist Gary Burton's ahead-of-its-time 1966 album Tennessee Firebird and guitarist Bill Frisell's bluegrass-infused Nashville. Add New York-based pianist Erik Deutsch's Outlaw Jazz to that list.
