About Dig Deeper Presents: John Ellison of the Soul Bros 6 (backed by the Brooklyn Rhythm Band)
Dig Deeper is honored to present John Ellison, the principal songwriter and lead vocalist of the mighty Soul Brothers Six, in a rare Brooklyn appearance, backed by the Brooklyn Rhythm Band.
In 1967, John Ellison wrote and performed with the Soul Brothers Six "Some kind of wonderful", which has become one of the most-covered songs in the canon of soul music (most famously by Grand Funk Railroad), an instantly recognizable song selling north of 42 million copies worldwide.
Despite the mammoth success of that one hit, sadly the group never met with equal acclaim on any of their other recordings, although they have long been revered by fans of soul around the world, whether the storming dancefloor-friendly "You better check yourself", the aching ballad "Somebody else is loving my baby", or the gritty funk of "You got to have rhythm" (re-popularized in 2001 when sampled by DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist for their "Product Placement" mix).
Although his performances in NYC have been rare, Ellison continues to perform around the world, most frequently in his current hometown of Toronto. We were so blown away by his all-too-brief, powerfully commanding a capella performance at a private event in 2012 that we instantly began planning to bring him back to town for a full show with a full band to feature songs from across his career, including some never performed live before. That was our 5th anniversary in 2013 - if you missed that, you had better be standing on solid ground in March, because he will absolutely knock you over.
As always, before and after the live sets, Dig Deeper's DJ Honky and Mr. Robinson will spin funk and soul 45s for the dancefloor. Wear your dancing shoes – you will need them!
