About Dheepa Chari

Singing since the age of 5, Dheepa is a classically trained vocalist who has been making her way into jazz over the last several years. Growing up in Dallas, TX, she participated in city and regional choirs throughout high school and went on to study vocal performance at Southern Methodist University. Shortly after, Dheepa moved to NYC for graduate school where she directed a classical choir at Columbia University and sang with the Juilliard Choral Union, performing in a variety of venues including Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall.

After her experience in classical music, Dheepa shifted gears and began to experiment with other musical genres. She studied vocal jazz with a private voice teacher and sang with an a capella group focused on jazz, pop, and rock. This group later branched out to form a jazz quartet and during this time, she also performed and recorded with Mission: on Mars, a world electronic band mixing breakbeat rhythms, Indian sitar melodies, and jazz guitar(www.myspace.com/missiononmars). She continues to perform and record with her band in Los Angeles as well as Mission: on Mars and other musicians in New York.
