About Blue Note Jazz Brunch / Billy Martin, Kato Hideki, Chris Cochrane / Maurice 'Mobetta' Brown & SOUL'd U OUT / Holly Bowling

With a steady base as one-third of the renowned experimental jazz trio Medeski, Martin, & Wood, drummer Billy Martin has become one of the most forward-thinking, innovative, and influential percussionists in the music world. His ultra-sensitive, hyper-melodic drumming -- which explores the ideas of jazz, hip-hop, electronica, African music, and other genres -- has an organic feel to it, filled with soft, natural edges and fluid energies. When not performing with Medeski Martin & Wood, Martin continues to collaborate with other musicians in improvisational projects, many of which are documented on his own Amulet Records imprint, which he founded in 1995.

Kato Hideki is a bassist, composer & producer. As a bassist, he has worked with Eyvind Kang, John King, Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Christian Marclay, New York City Ballet, Billy Martin, Zeena Parkins, Marc Ribot, Nana Vasconcelos and John Zorn, among others. His own groups include: Death Ambient with Fred Frith & Ikue Mori; Tremolo of Joy with Charles Burnham, Briggan Krauss, Ed Tomney & Calvin Weston; Plastic Spoon with Karen Mantler, Douglas Wieselman & Shahzad Ismaily; and the solo works Hope & Despair and Turbulent Zone. His music has been released on Tzadik Records, Virgin UK; broadcast on BBC Radio 3, WNYC and NPR. He co-produced Karen Mantler's Business is Bad, and music for the Bessie Award-winning THEM with Chris Cochrane, Dennis Cooper and Ishmael Houston-Jones. Kato has collaborated with Karen Mantler since 1999.

Since moving to New York City, Chris has performed regularly in bands and improvised with hundreds of players. He is considered to be one of the most brilliant, daring, singular guitarists and songwriters out there. In addition to his rare solo recordings and work with a number of bands, including the legendary, groundbreaking experimental prog unit NO SAFETY, which he co-founded with harpist Zeena Parkins, he has played live and/or recorded with an astounding array of similarly great musicians (John Zorn, Bongwater, Fred Frith, Mike Patton, Marc Ribot, Ikue Mori, ...) visual artists, and choreographers. Filling out the trio are Hanna Fox (drums and vocals) and Tim Thomas (bass and vocal) of Babe the Blue Ox fame.

Holly Bowling is a classically trained pianist who began playing piano at the age of five. There's one major distinction, however, that separates her from other similarly studied musicians. That is Holly's devotion to the legendary rock band Phish. Having attended over 300 shows by the Burlington-based quartet, she became obsessed by their famous rendition of "Tweezer" from Lake Tahoe on July 31, 2013. It led Holly to transcribe this 37-minute improvisational masterpiece note-for-note and arrange it for solo piano. The process, both painstaking and fulfilling, inspired her to transform other Phish songs and well-known live jams into solo piano interpretations. That journey has ultimately led to her debut album, Distillation Of A Dream: The Music Of Phish Reimagined For Solo Piano, and a continuing series of performances across the country. Holly's breathtaking interpretations of Phish classics like "My Friend, My Friend," "The Squirming Coil" and "Harry Hood" serve not only as a tribute to the modern day kings of jam, but stand on their own as fully developed classical pieces.
