About "Best Of"

One-Woman Play "Best Of" Examines Everyday Struggles

When "Best Of" hits the stage at Ellen Stewart Theatre at La MaMa, you'll meet a young Malay Muslim woman who's going through a divorce. She starts her day at the prison and ends it at the hospital. In between, this every-woman meets strangers and encounters prejudice. Sometimes she hates what she sees around her and at other times, she's moved. She is neither a stereotype, nor a statistic. Award-winning Singaporean actress Siti Khalijah Zainal takes center stage in this one-woman show specially created for her by Alvin Tan and Haresh Sharma of Singapore-based theatrical company The Necessary Stage. First performed in 2013 and staged four times in Singapore and Malaysia to popular and critical acclaim, "Best Of" arrives in New York fresh from its successful run in Brisbane Festival 2015. She'll share the details of her day, as well as her past, her dreams and her fears. The show is part of a series of Singapore Arts events and will be followed by a complimentary wine and cheese tasting held at the Something To Write Home About Visual Arts exhibition space.
