About Baeb Rxxth, Alarke
two headed trap-pop monstar with zero chill. knocking stuff out of the proverbial park.
Brooklyn electronic wondercore outfit Alarke is the project of Mary Alouette/singer-guitarist-electronicist, with Clint Greenlee/bass-synth and Kyle Hutchins/drums rounding out the live set. Her sound references a swathe of influences - electric, jazzy, psychedelic, progressive, soothing and urgent - slipping in and out of genres and defying definition.
A stunning song siren – award-winning electronic jazz singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Alarke is one to watch. Her voice bears both tone and control earned through opera training and the emotional connection of a jazz and soul singer grounded in her work performing as a Gypsy jazz singer under the name Mary Alouette. Her songs, full of infectious melodies and dangerous rhythms, have laid the groundwork for a fresh, distinctive, and unforgettable sound.
Her Gypsy jazz singing brought her to stay in a Gypsy caravan in France, but before that she's headlined at venues including the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage, Blues Alley, and Terra Blues; shared the bill with Stevie Wonder; sung at Carnegie Hall; competed in the Apollo Theater's tour; performed the US National Anthem for major league baseball teams; studied opera singing internationally; and worked in the studio as an audio engineer. She's won awards for her songwriting and was an Artist in Residence at Strathmore. From releasing two EPs of original music that combine Gypsy jazz and electronic music to composing and performing live film scores at Nitehawk Cinema in New York City, her creative muscles have flexed a complex vibrancy reflected from her formative years in Montreal, Canada.
"Her performances draw you in with their soft, hypnotic qualities, turning each song into a dialogue between her and the audience." – Brooklyn Exposed
"I suppose now that technology is so portable, it was only a matter of time until someone tried incorporating electronic elements into gypsy jazz. But that's not everything Alarke does. With a voice that sounds wild but always in control, this ex-opera student's sound is too multifaceted to be pigeonholed in a few sentences. Gypsy jazz influences intersect with old style French ballads and wicked trip hop/ambient tracks – and sometimes all these ingredients get mixed together." – The Deli Magazine NYC
