About Soul Clap Records Winter Residency featuring Underground System Afrobeat, FSQ and The SQs with Dolette McDonald, Bosq, Bamboozle

Soul Clap Records is blasting into 2018 with a three month winter residency at home in Brooklyn. Going down the first Friday of February, March and April at neighborhood establishment C’mon Everybody, the series is a chance for the Live side of the label to take center stage. Each month we shine a light on three artists from our musical family, celebrating new releases and lasting connections, while label boss Bamboozle aka Eli Soul Clap guides the turntables in different directions.

The residency kicks off February 2nd with New York disco phenomenon Midnight Magic, Funk Train connection Michael The Lion & Amy Douglas performing a special Live set and the fabulous stylings of The Illustrious Blacks.

March 2nd we celebrate the release of two new Soul Clap Records projects. A secret one we can’t announce until February and Detroit up and comer Pontchartrain will be launching his Citalmina EP. The icing on the cake is a rare live appearance by Modern Funk icons the Social Lovers.

April 6th goes out with a bang as we welcome eight piece Afro-Disco-Funk-Latin-Punk powerhouse Underground System to the label. Along with the first ever appearance of long time Soul Clap family FSQ’s new band, FSQ and The SQs featuring the one and only Dolette McDonald on vocals. To top it off we have longtime friend and collaborated Bosq joining Bamboozle on the wheels of steel.

2018 is a big year for Soul Clap Records with new EPs coming from Nona Hendryx, Ancient Deep, Pontchartrain and of course Soul Clap, albums lined up from Underground System and FSQ, the 5th edition of the Dancing On The Charles series a new compilation called Italo Funk and finally House On 45, a series of 45s of new house music from some of the guiding lights of Modern Funk and Electronic Music curated by Bamboozle. Come and join us on the mothership!

UNDERGROUND SYSTEM is a quintessential New York City band.

A convergence of musical and cultural influences, the unstoppable female-fronted group of neo-afrobeat deconstructionists have cultivated a sound as inimitable as its members.

Owing their foundations to traditional afrobeat (and named after a Fela Kuti song), the band has built a national reputation around a seamlessly executed stage show, astonishing wherever they go, and compelling crowds to move with unbridled verve. Robbing american “afrobeat” of its derivative formalism, Underground System continues to reinvent their brand of global
dance music, remaining a force determined to recreate, redefine, and reconstruct.

The band has released two single/EPs and several remix records on Ropeadope and Hell Yeah! (Italy), receiving airplay on the BBC, WNYC (Soundcheck), KCRW (Los Angeles) and WPFW (DC) and press coverage from blogs such as Afropunk, Okayafrica, Afropop Worldwide, The Village Voice, Test Pressing, Timeout, and others. In demand with large scale cultural institutions as well as festivals and club nights, notable 2017 performances include Central Park SummerStage w/ Seun Kuti & Roy Ayers, Bowery Ballroom (NYC) w/ !!! (chk chk chk), Chicago World Music Festival, and National Sawdust w/ Tigue and Innov Gnawa.

2017 also marked the completion of the band’s first full length studio album. Departing from the extended forms typically associated with their live performances and stylistic roots, this unsigned body of work epitomizes the band’s growth and showcases their uniquely New York flair. Hints of afrobeat, no wave, world, electronic, contemporary classical, disco, house, and genre defying elements combine tightly to reflect a self-aware, edgy, and cohesive statement not currently being made by any other band.

Each member of this quintet derives from a deep musical background.

Chuck Da Fonk toured and recorded with George Clinton & Parliament - Funkadelic in the mid nineties. The Hourchild is equal parts hype-man as he is discographer, having cut his teeth in the nineties servicing Tommy Boy’s record pool. The Hourchild is also George Clinton’s nephew who looked after a young Chuck back in the day. Philly-based Matt Coogan “One Era” is a talented multi-instrumentalist and producer. Chas Bronz, is most known for his talents behind the decks, on the guitar, as well as a slew of other instruments. Rounding out the group is none other than G Koop. G's a talented producer, session musician and replay specialist for the likes of Nelly, George Clinton, Drake, Talib Kweli, Atmosphere, Ice Cube, Scarface et al.

Winter 2014 brought about FSQ’s first release on Soul Clap records, the "Zulu Congo Call” EP. In addition to working on new productions, FSQ continues to remix other artists’ works in their signature style of Northern Soul and Caribbean Disco.

What do The Police, Rolling Stones, Michael Zager, Nona Hendricks, Talking Heads, Mantus, David Byrne, Jerry Harrison, Gang of Four, Holly & The Italians, Tears For Fears, Sandii & the Sunsetz, Chic, Laurie Anderson, Sting, Steve Winwood, Don Henley and Juan Gabriel have in common?

Easy - Dolette McDonald.

For more than two decades, Dolette was back up vocalist extraordinaire, performing or recording with all those big names and more.

Bosq has been tirelessly exploring the intersections of Afro-Latin music with Disco, Funk, Reggae, House and Hip Hop for years. With two full albums released on Ubiquity Records, bosq y orquesta de madera (2013) & celestial strut (2015), a forthcoming EP on Soul Clap Records, and a full length album being recorded in the spring of 2015 with the Candela All-Stars in Puerto Rico, the fruits of those labors are beginning to show in abundance.

He first gained notoriety as one half of the whiskey barons, churning out a continuous stream of edits and remixes, as well as being the sole producer on the now highly sought after, out of print Whiskey Barons x Bastard Jazz releases. The unofficial mixes led to a slew of official remix work for heavy hitters like Fania Records, Nickodemus, Cosmo Baker, and many more. Fellow Boston native Kon tapped bosq to handle the technical end of the production for all of the “Kon & The Gang” releases, and many of the now famed multi-track edits (including the Hooked on You and Feel Reel 12”s on basic fingers). The collaborations led to a release by the two under the name “Nitetime” on the prestigious AU imprint Future Classic.

In the fall of 2013 is when Bosq truly stepped out on his own with his first entirely original full- length album. Dance floors and critics both responded well, with beatswapmeet saying “it’s a beautiful mixture of afro beats, latin rhythms, soulful house, disco, with subtle dancehall and hip hop influences” and dates in Boston, NYC, DC, LA & SF to support the release. Since then, more remixes for Soul Clap, Fania, The Warsaw Afrobeat Orchestra, Cultures of soul, and many others are being juggled alongside the constant writing and production of new material.

Bosq’s music has seen consistent play from the likes of Gilles Peterson & Craig Chariles on the BBC, KCRW, RinseFM & countless others, while Dj’s like Poolside, Nancy Whang, Soul Clap, Elijah Wood & Jeremy Soul give his tunes constant rotation in clubs and at festivals. Gigs have taken Bosq across North & South America & Europe, sharing stages with Joe Claussel, Bobbito, Quantic, J Rocc & Tony Touch to name a few.
