About Sasha Dobson, The Looking

Sasha Dobson grew up in Santa Cruz, CA. Her father Smith Dobson was one of the Bay Area's most influential and in-demand pianists, her mom a well-known singer and her brother an accomplished drummer.

By the time she was 12, Sasha was performing with the entire family at the Monterey Jazz Festival. She moved to Brooklyn at 17 and quickly assimilated into the NYC jazz scene, releasing 2005's The Darkling Thrush, recorded with The Chris Byars Octet, and Modern Romance (2006). The latter, which won praise from TIME Magazine, was produced by Jesse Harris.

She began playing in dive bars with her friend Norah Jones, who invited Sasha to join her on tour. Dobson's most recent album, Aquarius (2013), was recorded with guitarist/producer Joel Hamilton (Black Keys, Tom Waits, Sparklehorse) and hailed by MAGNET as "raw and compelling." She and her band performed at Farm Aid 2013 and Dobson opened for Willie Nelson on a series of early 2014 dates.

Fusing together a wide scope of inspiration including opera, punk rock, traditional folk, and psychedelic soul, The Looking (aka Todd Carter), creates music that has been described as "intriguing....fascinating" (Collected Sounds), "eclectic and provocative," (The Chronicle), and "like nobody else you have heard before" (IndieMusic.com ). Carter's credits range from singing the role of Siegmund in Wagner's Walkyrie at CAMI Hall and performing at Carnegie Hall, to playing NYC rock-club staples like The Bowery Electric and Arlene's Grocery. Promoting his latest album Songs for a Traveler, Carter has been performing to sold-out crowds at notable venues including Symphony Space, Joe's Pub, and Rockwood Music Hall. Carter's ability to captivate audiences at such a wide range of musical locales lies in the power of his "phenomenal….goose-bump-inducing" (Direct Current) voice. Between Todd's operatic training and the guttural rock growl, it is difficult for anyone's ears to ignore the sound. To flesh out The Looking, Carter performs and records with New York luminaries whose collective credits include playing with everyone from Norah Jones and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, to Andrew Bird and DJ Logic. Carter is currently preparing his next release which should be out in early 2015. In addition to his performing and composing career, Carter is also an accomplished music producer and is currently working with Argentinian-born Bernado Palombo, as well French artist Leopold.
