About Revive Big Band led by Igmar Thomas

Bridging together genres and artists of multiple generations —Igmar Thomas’ Revive Big Band brings a high-energy big band approach to music by Oliver Nelson, Wayne Shorter, A Tribe Called Quest, J. Dilla, Freddie Hubbard, Bilal, and more. This chameleonic group shifts with ease across swing, funk, hip-hop, R&B, soul, and beyond. Wayne Shorter’s “Speak No Evil,” to give one example, begins with a jagged, angular hip-hop groove before settling into a jazz/hip-hop fusion feel most popularly associated with artists like Robert Glasper (himself a member of the Revive collective). The big band instrumentation and detailed arrangements give these pieces a fresh and powerful energy with major crossover appeal for fans of any of the incorporated genres. A true super-group, the Revive Big Band has included over 50 members, all of whom have major name recognition in jazz, and many of whom have made significant contributions to the growing realm of jazz that–with knowledge, purpose, and integrity–incorporates defining elements of younger genres.
