Dilla, Freddie Hubbard, Bilal, and more. This chameleonic group shifts with ease across swing, funk, hip-hop, R&B, soul, and beyond. Wayne Shorter’s “Speak No Evil,” to give one example, begins with a jagged, angular hip-hop groove before settling into a jazz/hip-hop fusion feel most popularly associated with artists like Robert Glasper (himself a member of the Revive collective). The big band instrumentation and detailed arrangements give these pieces a fresh and powerful energy with major crossover appeal for fans of any of the incorporated genres.
